Where alcohol actually gets absorbed

Alcohol doesn't need to be digested. Once it's in your gut, it passes straight through the lining into your blood. Only about 20% is absorbed through the stomach wall; the other 80% is absorbed in the small intestine, which has a far larger surface area and does the job much faster.

How food slows alcohol down

At the base of your stomach sits the pyloric valve, which controls how quickly the stomach empties into the small intestine. When you eat, that valve stays closed longer while food is digested — a process called slowed gastric emptying. Alcohol gets held up in the stomach with the food instead of rushing ahead.

The result is a slower, more gradual rise in blood alcohol concentration that peaks later and lower. Drink the same amount on an empty stomach and the alcohol pours quickly into the intestine, producing a sharp spike. Food also lets more alcohol be broken down in the stomach and liver before it ever reaches your general circulation.

How big is the difference? In controlled research, eating a substantial meal shortly before drinking has cut peak BAC and the total amount of alcohol reaching the bloodstream by more than half compared with drinking fasted. Some studies have measured an empty-stomach peak BAC several times higher for the same drinks. The catch: food changes the peak, not the maths

Eating lowers how high your BAC climbs, but it doesn't lower the total amount of alcohol your liver has to process, and it can't remove alcohol that's already in your blood. Your liver still works at a fixed pace of roughly one standard drink per hour, and only time brings your BAC back down.

So a big dinner is not a free pass to drink more, and it's certainly not a way to sober up. If you've had six standard drinks with a three-course meal, you've still had six standard drinks — they'll just take a slightly different path to the same destination.

Food does not make you safe to drive. A meal can keep your peak BAC lower, but it can't tell you that you're under 0.05. Impairment starts well below the legal limit, estimates carry real uncertainty, and only time reduces BAC.
